Copenhagen September 26th till September 30th-part 1

I arrived in Copenhagen Airport where I waited for Jessica’s flight to arrive a couple hours later. I used this time to relax, write in my journal, listen to music and I even fit in a nap. I looked super cool with my sunglasses on inside the airport b/c while I have no shame falling asleep in public places I nap better if my eyes are covered in some way be that my hair, my arm, or my sunglasses.

Kaitlin met us at the metro stop then we headed to her apt to start making dinner. We had a hyggelight night with baked salmon, potatoes with dill, a FANTASTIC salad, and Carlsberg Beer. 1) My friend Tommy, an NU friend and fellow Chapino, is studying in Copenhagen and came to have dinner with us. I have so many fond memories of listening to Tommy tell stories and he did not disappoint Monday night either. I’m sure Kaitlin and Jessica understood by the end of the evening why I talk him up as a great guy. While catching up with Tommy, I realized that I was confused about the Danes and the Dutch. Back in July, I downloaded lots of podcasts to help me learn simple phrases for each country I was visiting. Good thing I didn’t remember any of the Dutch because in Denmark they speak Dannish—not Dutch. lol

2) Kaitlin took us down the main tourist strip which is right next to her work place. We stopped inside a fancy department store to check out their bakery and I felt that I had to eat a Dannish. It was good and I was sad to see it disappear! The other sweet I purchased later in my trip was a nougat marzapin something. That green pastry was delicious and I tried really hard to not eat it in ten seconds.

3)Through her work, Kaitlin got us free canal tour tickets. It was such a pleasant way to see so many landmarks. My favorites were these condominiums that were so architecturally interesting and the “Black Diamond” public library.

4) The famous Little Mermaid statue off the harbor as seen from our canal tour boat. I was forewarned that it was small by Judith’s mother and I’m glad that I didn’t have to walk there to see it.

5) A good majority of the bridges along the canal are super short forcing people to duck except I didn’t have any problem for some reason. Here is another pic of Jessica doing a fun face.

6) I felt I had to take a picture with the anchor since I’m in the Navy. At first, I was just sitting on it but then I wanted to just chill on it. And so continues the unintentional series of me lying down in random places.

7) Before arriving in Copenhagen, Kaitlin kept talking about this crazy polsen hot dog she had there. Jessica and I decided to try it for lunch. The meat part was a skinny long “hot dog” polsen in a skinny long toasted bun (perfect since I don’t like a lot of bread anyways!) topped with pickles, mustard, romoulade, and fried crispy onions. I would definitely get it again.

8) Our next dinner was chicken parmesan and a repeat appearance of the salad from our first night. I loved that salad so much that I asked to make it so I could learn how to make it. mmmm, so good

9) This lion is outside the Ny Carlsberg Museum. Lions seem to be outside every dang building. They are usually standing regally but I don’t think I’ve ever seen one eating/killing another animal.

10) Inside the National Museum (which is free btw) I found this crazy cool art piece. As you can see from the picture, the painting is distorted but when you look at it from the cylindrical mirror you can see the image.
