After Notre Dame, I made my way over to Sainte Chapelle which is just one block away. I was a little unsure whether to wait in line for this place but I am beyond glad I visited. Gorgeous. Just amazing. I really liked this place. Sure, the Notre Dame was massive and impressive because of its size, but Sainte Chapelle was small and yet so beautiful. I was awed by the lower chapel which was meant for the poor and common people, which really got me wondering how I’d react to the upper chapel.
After spending a good while there, I headed for the upstairs. I was not disappointed by the upper chapel. 3 of the 4 walls were completely stained glass. And the one short wall that wasn’t completely stained glass still had a quite massive and big circle window. Each “panel” depicts stories from the bible starting with Genesis on the left side, continuing to the passion on rear wall, and the apocalypse over entry.
I have to admit that the upper chapel was a bit more overwhelming than the lower chapel so I only looked at different stained glass images in detail when Rick Steves gave context to it.
The weather was a little overcast but I can only imagine what the interior would have looked like with sun shining through the glass.
But anyways, this was probably my favorite place in Paris. I would totally recommend it and hopefully there will be less people around when you go so you can take it in slowly and in full relaxation mode.
btw, I learned all this from the same Rick Steves audio tour——sooo glad I checked for podcasts
